The Ulster team for the Senior Interpros gave a great account of themselves competing for 2nd place to the last match and only losing out on joint second by missing a lob by 2 inches!!

First up on Friday was the match versus the home province and Ulster started well with Przemek winning comfortably 6-1 6-3 at mens first singles. Unfortunately Karola could not keep it going losing in straight sets to the experienced Niamh Coveney in Karolas first match at Senior Interpro level. The mens 2nd singles produced another Ulster victory with Aaron stubbs outlasting Munsters David Gardiner in two tight sets. At Ladies second singles the experienced Munster player of Andrea Maughan found it difficult to hit though Ulsters Emily Beatty and an epic see saw match followed. Emily won the first set 6-4 but lost the 2nd 6-4. Things seemed to be going Munsters way as Andrea opened up a 5-1 lead in the 3rd . However facing 3 match points at 5-1 40-0 Emily produced her best tennis to win 5 points in a row to get to 5-2. From here on in she refused to miss a ball and got the score back to 6-5 40-30 to her. A 35 shot rally ensued on Match point which Emily won when her opponent tied up with cramp and couldn’t chase the ball down. 3-1 Ulster!!

The Mens doubles started brightly with Nelson and Peter breaking the Munster pair in the first game and held off a few break points to win the set 6-4. An early break again in the second set them on their way but the mounting break point chances for Munster began to take its toal as Munster broke twice to take the 2nd 6-3. The 3rd started tightly with good holds before Ulster again let a break slip in and the match was over all too quickly losing the 3rd 6-2. The Girls doubles came up against an inspired Munster team and were well beaten 6-2 6-0

Saturday morning was Leinster and the Ulster Team came out looking to take scalps. Przemek played Ciaran Fitzgerald at first singles and the match was full of long rallies and swung one way then another with the first 2 sets shared. Przemek had the upper hand in the third creating break point chances without converting any and was then suddenly under pressure at 5-4 down. 3 match points were saved before he succumbed on the 4th!!

Karola again met a tough opponent in ex Professional Rachel Dillon and struggled agains the big serve and forehand of her opponent losing 6-1 6-0 . At second ladies Alexis Russell competed hard with Veteran Star Lesley O Halloran losing the first set 6-2  and the 2nd 6-1.

At Mens 2nd singles Nelson Boyle started well against opponent John McGahon controlling the first set and looking comfortably in control taking it 6-4. The second set initially Nelson controlled also without getting the break and McGahon was starting to find his range and broke Nelson to win the set 6-4. Nelson conceded another break early in the third as his opponent hit forehand winners from all over the court. But Nelson broke back to square the set at 3-3 and set it up for a great finish but in the very next game he conceded a couple of cheap points and lost the break again and the chance and match was gone.

The two doubles matches were won comfortably by Leinster.

In the final match with Connacht a 6-0 victory was required for any chance of 2nd place. Karol and Peter Bothwell won convincingly at first singles and were followed by Karl Donaldson and Alexis winning their respective singles comfortably after dropping the first sets.

Into the doubles and all looked good as Ulster won the first sets in both. The ladies doubles cruised to a 5-2 lead in the 2nd before some choice words from the Connacht non playing captain sparked their girls into action and they won 5 games on the trot to take the 2nd set. However Ulsters girls of Emily and Fiona regrouped and stormed through the 3rd set 6-1 to take a 5-0 match lead. Back to the boys doubles and Nelson and Aaron kept putting the Connacht serves under pressure with great returns , got the break and served for the match at 5-3 in the second. 2 match points came and went and Nelson missed a lob by 2 inches on one of them to keep the Connacht pair alive. They took the 2nd set 7-5 and despite the Ulster pairs best efforts , breaking back at 5-2 down in the third they eventually lost 6-4 . This meant that Munster secured 2nd place by taking the 2nd singles against Leinster.
