QUALIFICATION PROCESS

Please note that the qualification process for the National Matchplays has changed this season.

The National Matchplays are scheduled to take place the weekend of FRIDAY 8th to SUNDAY 10th DECEMBER

1. The top 12 available players from the National Rankings in each age group on a specified date will qualify directly for the National Matchplays. The ranking date used to determine these players will be:

  • Under 12, 14 and 16: Tuesday 7th November 2017 (including 2018 tournaments e.g. David Lloyd)
  • Under 18: Tuesday 28th November 2017 (including 2018 tournaments, e.g. David Lloyd and Under 18 Provincial Matchplays)

2. Players who qualify as part of the top 12 in the National rankings for Under 12/14/16 will NOT play in the Provincial Matchplays.

3. There will be one further place in each age group for the winner of the Provincial Matchplay, as long as there is at least one player in the Provincial matchplays who is ranked in the top 30 of the National rankings. If the winner of the Provincial matchplay cannot play in the National Rankings, then the place will be offered to the runner-up, as long as they are ranked in the top 30 of the National rankings. Further reserve places in the Nationals will be allocated by National ranking.

4. Players who anticipate a top 12 national ranking on the relevant ranking date may provisionally enter the National matchplays and not the Provincial matchplays. Players who enter the Provincial matchplays and then gain direct entry into the Nationals will have their entry fee for the Provincial matchplay refunded.

5. The current updated age group National rankings for November 7th 2018 can be found at https://www.tennisireland.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/TI-Junior-Ranking-45-2017-new-age-groups-only.xlsx - these will be used to determine the top 12 players who will qualify directly for the Under 12, 14 and 16 National Matchplays. These rankings will be further updated for Under 18 after the the Under 18 Provincial matchplays.

See https://www.tennisireland.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/2017-Winter-matchplay-rules-website-update-2.pdf for more details on the new process.
