UTP Masters Teams Away Trips October 2015
UTP Masters Event 2015
This year the UTP Masters saw a change of format, instead of be carried out over a full weekend with full matches, it became a one day superset event in each age group and this year there was more to play for! The top 4 players from each superset would go through to the second week of play and have a chance to get onto the new Ulster Masters Teams. The Ulster Masters teams would then get the chance to travel away for a weekend to play some matches.
The U14 Team consisted of Cian McDonnell, Harry McCracken, Ben Laverty and Johnny McCracken for the boys and Rachael McCrum, Ciara Hill, Anna Gillespie and Katie Foster.
The U14 team travelled to Dundalk on Saturday 10th October to play against a team of John McGahon's players that afternoon. Everyone played a singles and a doubles match, there was a lot of tight matches with the Ulster Team eventually coming out on top 8-4.
The Ulster Girls in particular played very well and won all 6 of their matches!
Later that evening we all went out for dinner as a team and went bowling (where the girls beat the boys). We then spent the night in Dundalk as we where training with the Dundalk team the next day.
Overall it was a great weekend of fun and well done to all the players on winning their matches!
The U18 Team consisted of Matthew O’Boyle, Caleb Ralston, Jakob Robb and Ronan Mckeever for the boys and Sarah Cousins, Arianna Kennedy and Rebecca Gray for the girls.
The U18 team travelled across to Scotland for the weekend to first of all play a Stirling Select team at the Scottish National Centre on Saturday and then travelled to Edinburgh to play an Edinburgh team on the Sunday.
In Stirling the match format was set that everyone would play 2 singles matches and a doubles match. After a long day of tennis and a few very close championship tie break third sets Stirling edged to victory and won 10-8 in matches.
The team then travelled up in Edinburgh, checked into the hotel and had an hours rest before heading out for a team dinner.
On the Sunday morning the match took place at David Lloyd’s in Edinburgh. The team we where playing against came from Merchiston School and where captained by David Brewer who as a junior was ranked 17 in the world!
The Edinburgh team proved to be a long stronger than the team we had faced the previous day with several of their players having represented Scotland in the past. Edinburgh came out on top with Jakob being able to secure the only win for Ulster. After the matches were finished we had time to have lunch and watch the Ireland rugby match on TV before having to travel back home.
Overall despite losing to Edinburgh it was a great chance to play against some of the top players in Scotland and gain some match experience.
The team all had great fun and we hope we can do something like this again next year!
