Belfast 2016 Wheelchair Tennis Tournament

Another successful Belfast 2016 International Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, the 19th.
The Belfast Indoor Tennis Arena saw three days on intense competition as competitors from
England, Scotland and Ireland battled for the silverware on offer at one of GB and Ireland`s most
popular wheelchair tennis tournaments, now in it`s 19th year.
Local hopes for the top division singles where with Belfast man Gerard Milligan and Ivor Jess from Glenavy and following some good performances Jess went through to the semi finals to face English
ace Steve Crompton. Jess came through a close encounter against Crompton in straight sets which put him into the final where he was up against Scottish player Pistol Pete Moore. Jess who was dominant throughout the match again won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 to give him the main draw singles title.
Jess and Milligan teamed up in the top division doubles event and finished runners up after a three set thriller (7/5 5/7 6/7) which was won by the pairing of Jason Black from Dundonald and London man Noel McShane.
The B Division singles title was won by up and coming young player Ross Gourley from Belfast who also lifted the B Division doubles title when he teamed up with Nathan McCabe from Castlewellan.
The same young partnership of Gourley and McCabe also recently won a bronze medal at the school games in Loughborough.
The C division singles was won by Scottish player Bobby Park with runner up going to Tabitha Fung from England.
This successful tournament was again organised and run by the Local Spokes In Motion wheelchair Tennis Club and Ulster branch Tennis Ireland and during the prize giving George Stevenson MBE (Tennis Ireland President) thanked the tournament sponsors including Belfast City Council ‘support for sport’, Robert Roberts who provided the Evian water, and Burn Road Trade Sales for sponsoring the trophies.
